Ruby, perceived as a dynamic and reflective general-purpose object-oriented programming language, draws inspiration from Perl while incorporating Smalltalk-like features along with influences from Eiffel and Lisp. Created by Yukihiro "Matz" Matsumoto in the mid-1990s in Japan, Ruby supports various programming paradigms—functional, object-oriented, imperative, and reflective—coupled with a dynamic type system and automatic memory management. Its design encapsulates principles similar to those found in languages such as Smalltalk, Python, and Perl.

The standard implementation of Ruby (1.8.7) is written in C as a single-pass interpreted language. The specifications are currently under development by the Open Standards Promotion Center of Japan for consideration by the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee and the International Organization for Standardization. While several alternative implementations of Ruby are in progress or available, including YARV, JRuby, Rubinius, IronRuby, MacRuby, and HotRuby, each adopts distinct approaches to compilation.

Matsumoto's vision was to establish a scripting language combining the power of Perl with greater object-oriented capabilities than Python. He expressed hope that Ruby would enhance productivity and enjoyment for programmers globally. The name "Ruby" was selected during an online discussion between Matsumoto and Keiju Ishitsuka on February 24, 1993, prior to any coding. Ultimately chosen over "Coral," it reflects personal significance as one colleague's birthstone.
